Health & Wellness Article - May 2012

In looking for role models for older adults, we often hear about the extraordinary individuals who run marathons in their 90s, graduate with advanced degrees, achieve a seemingly impossible bucket-list goal, or overcome an unexpected health crisis. Hats off and kudos to them! They provide inspiration and retool ageist beliefs for all of us.
This column is celebrating individuals who are not super stars in the eyes of the media. Instead, these are heroes who provide a roadmap for all of us to follow in regard to a life well lived as we grow older. The following comments from Touchmark residents represent a philosophy and commitment that enrich their lives and the lives of those who know them.
I celebrate today. Each and every day that I wake up, I acknowledge the value and opportunity of this day. No one will define that for me. I reserve the right to define it.
I acknowledge my limitations and the limitations of each day. Some days I feel well, invigorated, and ready. Other days, I do not. I ask for help to evaluate the possibilities and to fix or accept the problems and shortcomings.
I welcome the challenges. I never saw myself as a hero in my life or the lives of others. Yet, I acknowledge and accept the possibilities of the difference I can make—on my own or with others. Let me know what you need, and I can evaluate what I can provide.
I seek balance in achieving what is possible and accept what is not. I ask for support for both outcomes.
We give thanks for all of the unsung/uncelebrated heroes who show up for life each day and strive to live a full life. A key feature of the Touchmark Full Life program is the acknowledgement of the individual preferences, strengths, skills, and goals that allow us to help each resident achieve their very personal goals.
