Get Moving: Active Aging Week Comes to Touchmark

Get Moving

The Benefits of Physical Activity

Physical activity can deliver a multitude of benefits, and according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, is a must for continued health—especially for those over 65. Exercise can help keep bones strong, reduce pain from osteoarthritis, and help lower blood pressure. It can also help prevent bone loss and chronic disease, and several studies show it improves mental health.

Research and Mental Health

One 2019 study out of McMaster University revealed that one intense cardio session per week combined with biweekly strength workouts reduced depression in seniors over age 65. Another study from Stanford University found that even just walking outside could reduce rumination.

Celebrating Active Aging

Within Touchmark, every day is a celebration of active aging, and October 3 – 9, 2022 was especially eventful, as it is designated Active Aging Week by the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA). During Active Aging Week, fun and fitness were the operative words throughout Touchmark. From specialized workshops on nutrition and exercise to guided nature walks, our health and fitness teams offer something for everyone’s wellness journey. Notable examples include:

  • Touchmark Olympics: with custom-built torch and cauldron made by the Building Services team that remained lit all week at Touchmark at Meadow Lake Village. Resident and Olympic Senior Games medalist Pat Fujii lit the torch and began the ceremonial procession to kick it all off.
  • S3 balance demos: at Touchmark on West Century, marking the first time this innovative fitness program has been available in the state of North Dakota.
  • Healthy cooking demo: by Chef Elijah at Touchmark at Harwood Groves.
  • Friendly competitions: Touchmark on West Prospect launched a full slate of friendly competitions ranging from a bake-off, trivia contest, golf chip shot contest, etc. They also hosted an art/craft show, resident hobby showcase, scavenger hunt, and a bake sale benefiting Parkinson’s research.

Ongoing Wellness and Fitness

Fitness classes and personal training are ongoing throughout the year, such as the Touchmark Trekkers (outdoors and indoors!), along with numerous other daily activities, including offerings from our Health & Fitness clubs and studios. What’s more, our specialized programs are not just open to Touchmark residents but also to members of the public who would benefit from our programming.

ICAA created the Active Aging Week campaign to not only help adults get moving but to inspire everyone as well. At Touchmark, residents can work on their fitness goals every week or learn new skills, whether it’s pickleball, yoga, or a better swing on the links.

Resident Perspectives

Touchmark at Meadow Lake Village resident Ronald Crimmons is an example of how fun and fitness go hand-in-hand at Touchmark. “We love getting involved with the many events Touchmark hosts. They have all sorts of great entertainment come in. It’s a busy place! There is always something going on, and we love that,” he says. “This community has everything—a pool, workout equipment, exercise classes, activities, and more! It’s great.”
